Ideally, start planning 6–8 weeks in advance. This gives you enough time to book professional movers and preparations for your home move.

Earlier is better, AT least 4 weeks ahead, especially if you are move is during busy season, school holidays, or weekend or end of the month.

For affordable home moving costs, the best times to book are mid-week, mid-month, and during off-peak seasons such as autumn and winter. However, keep in mind that certain factors in the moving process may be beyond your control. 

  1. Weekdays are often cheaper, except Friday, and more flexible. Weekends are more convenient for house moving process due to less traffic and easy parking but some moving companies charge on weekend.

House removal costs in the UK vary depending on factors such as distance, volume of belongings, areas, and the services required for a stress-free move. On average, local moves range from £300 to £1,200, while long-distance relocations or larger properties can cost more.

Some of the main factors of house moving costs are:

  1. Size of home (number of rooms/items)
  2. Distance between addresses
  3. Packing/unpacking services
  4. Special handling (pianos, antiques, etc.)
  5. Day/time of the move
  6. Parking situation at collection and delivery addresses
  7. Dismantling and reassembling

You can save money for your house removals:

  1. Declutter and donate unwanted items
  2. Move during off-peak days
  3. Do your own packing unpack by you if you can
  4. Get and compare from different home moving companies

Begin packing at least 3–4 weeks before your home move, starting with non-essential items. If you have a larger property or many fragile and antique belongings, it’s best to hire professional packers to ensure safe and efficient packing.

Supermarkets and local shops but no ideal for fragile and heavy stuff.

You can check if any your friend or family member has moved recently for used boxes. You can order online marketplaces or ask your moving company (many provide them).

Packing yourself saves money, but movers offer professional, insured packing for fragile and bulky items.

Valuables (jewellery, cash, documents).

Essentials (clothes, toiletries, chargers).

Medications and important paperwork.

Travel documents if planning to go holidays.

Importation documents may you need at your new property and chargers.

Local move: Same city/region, usually under 50 miles.

Long-distance move: Over 50 miles, often between cities or across the country.

International moves: moving from the UK to any other countries.

Most movers won’t transport pets. Plants may be moved locally but not always long-distance. Some home moving companies do not provide insurance cover for plants.

Confirm details with movers.

Defrost fridge/freezer.

If your new property’s size and floor plan is different from you current property, It is better to mention destination rooms. 

For fragile use fragile tape or labels

If any damage occurs, report it immediately, as most professional movers provide insurance coverage for such situations. For special, antique, or high-value items, always notify your house removal company before the moving process begins to ensure they receive the proper care and protection.

At least 1–2 weeks before your move. Update it with banks, insurance, DVLA, employer, schools and subscriptions.
